Pre-tournament favourite Chan Soo Keong won the gross title and a berth to compete in the grand final in Australia when he returned with a score of 75. However, he can count his lucky stars that he had a back nine of 36 as it allowed him to snatch the title from Marsidi Adnan who also carded a 75, but lost on countback on the back nine.

Chan remarked after the prize-giving that he felt he could win the gross title but added: “I didn’t expect Marsidi to play so well, seeing that he plays most of his golf in Kuala Lumpur.”

Marsidi was visibly disappointed after playing so well and having to lose on countback.

“But I’m proud of myself, having to work so hard and finish with a 3-over gross of 75 on this challenging Bukit Jawi course. My time will come soon, I’m pretty sure of that,” he said.

The threesome of Cham Eu Leng, Pang Zip Yiap and Ng Cheng Weng combined to record a 6-under 210 nett which earned them the team title and a shot at the grand final, whose package includes return airfares on Malaysia Airlines, three nights accommodation at Surfer’s Paradise, meals and two rounds of tournament golf. They will play against other qualifiers in a bid to see who is crowned champions of 2010.

Second was the team of Tai Shu Fing, Wong Lye Hock and Wong Swee Pheng.

They finished five strokes behind but gained enough consolation by taking home Sony Ericsson mobile phones.

In third place two strokes further adrift were Lean Kay Hiang, Khor Choon Hooi and Yeoh Ching Nguang. They each won Wilson Staff Tour golf bags.

Raja Abdul Rashid and Mohamad Annuar Jalaludin won 32-inch LCDs for being closest to the pin on holes 8 and 16, respectively.

The grand lucky draw winner was Teoh Leng Teck who took home a Blackberry Javelin.

Close finish in Hanoi

Yap Chee Siong was brimming with confidence when he handed in his scorecard after the second round of the Maxis Team Golf Tour grand final in Chi Linh Star Golf Club in Hanoi last week.

He had just shot a 72 gross that put him firmly ahead of the field of 48 finalists in the race for the individual gross title. But little did his realise then, that his team who were lying third overnight after the opening round at Van Tri Golf Club, would go on to win the team title and the coveted Maxis challenge crystal trophy.

“I’m so happy to have played a part in my team’s success,” said Yap while being congratulated by his team-mates Wong Yong Siang and Lee Kong Sun.

Willsher, handing over the trophy to Yap, Wong and Lee at the grand final.

It was a close finish to an exciting season of the eighth Maxis Team Golf Tour. The top two teams notched 223 stableford points while the team who finished third, was only one point further back.

Yap and company boasted a lower combined handicap of 36 compared to the 37 of Cham Eu Leng, Pang Zip Yiap and Ng Cheng Weng and in accordance with Maxis Unique Rules, countback starts with the team with the lower combined handicap.

Apart from being presented with the traditional Vietnamese cone hats, the champions won a set of Nike irons each. Sixteen teams made it to the Maxis Team Golf Tour grand final in Hanoi after qualifying from 12 rounds that began in Kota Permai in March and ended in Sutera Harbour in August.

Hamdan Zambahari was the happiest individual of the field after being declared gross champion. He carded rounds of 77 and 78 which for a 155 total was four strokes more than Yap. But as the latter won the team title, it enabled the next best gross achiever to be declared individual champion.

Finishing third in the team event were the trio of Lim Chee Khoon, Foong Kam Kwong and Wee Hen Cheng. They won Nokia mobile phones.

The 48 finalists had the time of their lives in Hanoi. Treated as VIPs all the way, there was seamless check-ins at the hotel, golf clubs and even at the airports.

Matthew Willsher, Chief Marketing Officer of Maxis gave away the main prizes. He commented on the growth of the tournament, noting that 70% of the participants in Hanoi were first-timers in a Maxis final. Overall, he said that there was a 30 percent increase in participation this year.

THE 12th and final leg of the Maxis Team Golf Tour to be held at the Sutera Harbour Golf and Marina Resort on Aug 30 will be the last chance for participants to qualify for the grand finals.

The grand finals will be held at the King’s Island and Chi Linh Star golf clubs in Hanoi, Vietnam, from Oct 28 to 31.

The champion team and gross winner at Sutera Harbour will join 44 others at the grand finals.

Also at stake at Sutera Harbour is the BMW 5 Series, which is the ultimate prize for a hole-in-one at the Par 3 second hole of the Lakes Nine, as well as a full set of Nike gear worth RM11,500 on the designated Par 3 17th hole.

Meanwhile, Cham Eu Leng, Pang Zip Yeap and Ng Cheng Weng from Penang finished as the winners at the eighth leg of the Maxis Team Golf Tour at the Meru Valley Golf and Country Club recently.

They scored the 117 points and defeated Lim Eng Wah, Ooi Siew Seong and James Lee Hock Cheng by six points. Pakhruddin Abdul Majid also qualified for Hanoi when he won the gross category carding a 77.

Latest News - by KGR Action Committee Chairman

On 13.5.2008, a letter was sent by the state government to Uji Dunia
(the purchaser) inviting them to meet with our committee to discuss
about their intentions for Kristal Golf Resort. Unfortunately they are
not interested to meet up with us. Tell us to talk to Danaharta. I
think they are being very arrogant to even snub the new state
government.

On 26.06.08 the committee had a meeting with YB Ng Wei Aik
representing our CM YB Lim Guan Eng . We had a fruitful meeting
explaining the full situation from the beginning. It was positive from
the state government as the zoning of Kristal will not be converted
from recreation to development. Instructions will be given to Land
Office and MPSP. We also highlighted that this case not only affects
the KGR members but the golfing community throughout Malaysia as any
propriety club can just close up, sell their land for property
development without having to compensate their members.

This is serious message to our members, legally our case is very weak,
we have to come together, cooperate and support each other. We need
to use people power to win this . Makkal Sakthi. Please inform all
KGR members and all your friends who are golfers even from other
clubs to come and support our cause and course of action. Don't let a
precedent be set otherwise they may end up the same way as KGR's
members.

Watch out for further news. We will also be posting the committee's
collections and accounts soon for member's to view.
